Jack
- Female connector
into which a plug/pin(s) are inserted.
Jaggies
- Perpendicular lines, which can look like steps, on an on-screen image.
Jaggies are cause by a monitor resolution settings that are lower than
the one the application requires.
Java
- Programming language
created by Sun Microsystems widely used on the Internet that can be
safely downloaded from the Internet to computers and immediately run
without fear of viruses. Java uses small programs called applets, some
web pages include such applets that allow special programs to run on the
web page.
Java
Native Interface - A
Java programming interface, or API, that allows developers to access the
languages of a host system and determine the way Java integrates with
native code. The JNI has been a point of contention between Sun and
Microsoft, since Microsoft seeks to create its own native code interface
and Sun claims this violates their licensing agreement.
JavaStation
- A network computer
from Sun Microsystems that uses a Java application platform and a 100-MHz
CPU that began shipping in March, 1998. JavaStation is a thin client -- a
product relying on a network server for much of its processing and Sun
promotes it as low-cost alternative for high volume, fixed-function
needs, like processing reservations and transactions.
JIF
- Refer to Graphics
Interchange Format.
Jitter
buster - A device that
seeks to suppress jitters, or flickering signals, in audio transmissions.
JNI
- Refer to Java Native
Interface.
Job
- Specified
operation/task completed by the system.
Job
Number - Identifying
number assigned to each request sent to the CPU in networks and other
multi-user environments. Job numbers help the user identify a particular
job being held in a buffer, which is a small portion of memory that holds
jobs until the device they were sent to is ready for them.
Job
queue - Reserve where
job requests are held until they are sent to the CPU.
Joint
Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) - Color-image graphics compression format. The JPEG standard uses a
lossy sacrificed to achieve greater compression.
Journal
- Computers record of
its activities that can be used to reconstruct damage or keep a running
log of network activities.
Joystick
- A peripheral input
device that looks similar to a game joystick that you would find on a
game system.
JPEG
- Refer to Joint
Photographic Experts Group.
Julian
date - Method of
expressing the date based upon the number of days in a year.
Jumper
- On / off switch that
allows you to connect two pins by placing a plastic container with a
metal ban that connects one pin to another VIA the metal band, by doing
this it turns that switch on enabling a special function on the computer.
To turn the jumper to the off position the jumper is taken completely off
or usually just placed on one pin to not connect the pins therefore
disabling that function of the computer. Usually jumpers are used to
configure hardware on the computer such as the CPU speed, IRQ settings,
DMA address, CMOS password etc. Older computers did not have the pins and
just had the solider beads and to jump the solder beads a screw driver
was usually used to connect the electricity and enable that device, and
to keep the screw driver attached while the computer is on, and to not
remove it until the computer is off.
Justified
- Refer to Justify.
Justify - To line up a row of text vertically. For example that
is justified to the left will produce a clean crisp line of text on the
left-hand side of the page.
