B:
- Meaning the B drive on your computer usually either the 5.25 disk drive
or the 3.5 disk drive.
Backbone
- Main part of the network usually the fastest also because it caries the
majority of the data.
Backslash
- \ Usually used with the IBM to represent a path such as c:\windows
meaning the windows directory or if combined with cd\ will go back to
root directory.
Backspace
Key - Key used to
delete any character before the current position of the cursor.
Backup
- Method of saving important data just in case of a virus or if data is
destroyed being able to put it back on without having to recreate the
data.
Bad
Sector - Usually a
flaw with the disk or a manufacture defect if ran usually formatting the
hard drive will mark these bad sectors bad so that they will not be used.
Balloon
- Tells the user what would happen if they were to click on that
icon/button.
Band
- The distance between the high's and low's on a frequency.
Band
Width - The capacity
of a network or modem connection, usually measured in BPS.
Bank
- Usually referring to memory usually on a 486 system just one socket
will be 1 bank but on a Pentium you have two sockets witch combined are a
bank. (so when upgrading ram on a Pentium you need to upgrade to SIMMS at
one time because of the duel processing path.
Bar
Code - Lines in
different widths and sizes representing data when read will determine
what the thing scanning is.
Base
Address - Memory
address from which other memory addresses are referenced.
Baseline
- Where if a lower case letter is drooped below a imaginary line for
example juice the j is below all the rest.
Basic
- Beginner's all-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code, easy language which
is easily understood. Popular in the 70's-80's.
Basic
Rate Interface (BRI) - An
ISDN line that provides up to two 64 Kbps B-channels and one 16-Kbps D
channel over an ordinary two-wire telephone line. B-channels carry
circuit-oriented data or voice traffic while D-channels vary call control
signals.
Batch
File - Program used in
DOS with the extension *.bat can include any regular DOS command within
it or any other program if ran then just runs through the commands in the
batch file.
Battery
Backup - Device used
for the computer so if the computer looses power can be ran off of a
battery for a short period of time.
BAUD
- The number of frequencies made per second on a line. Usually does not
mean the same thing as BPS. bay - A slot on the computer used for expansion for add-on's to your
computer such as a new hard drive.
Bernoulli
Drive - Made by
Iomega, and invented by a scientist named Bernoulli just like a disk
drive but faster and more rugged, but not as fast as a hard drive.
Beta
Testing - A program
that has not been introduced, but is just for testing and if problems
found are fixed before the real copy is introduced.
BI-Directional
- Meaning capable of transmitting data in both directions but not at the
same time.
Binary
- 8 bit number system usually using just 0 and 1's to express numbers and
other data example the number 2 is 10 Example.
BIOS
- Tells the system what the computer has particular things such as a
disk-drive new hard-drive memory.....Always is stored on the computer no
matter if it is turned on or off.
Bipolar
- Chip design also describes the way that digital information is
transmitted through the positive and negative values of "1" and
"0".
BIT
- Binary digit. The single unit of information that is the basic
formative unit representing a single character. When referring to
Electronics term derived from the words binary digit. A bit is
either on or off.
Bit
Map - Graphic file
usually ending in *.bmp were several bits are made up to make one full
image.
Bit-Mapped
Font - Font that if
enlarged will have jagged edges instead of the scalable font were no
mater what the size will look just the same.
Bits
Per Second (BPS) -
Measurement of data transmission speed. BPS means how many bits that pass
a certain point in one second, the more bits per second the faster the
download and upload time on the computer
BNC
Connector - Connector
used with coaxial Ethernet cable. The connector is bayonet-style meaning
that it is put in then turned and locked in.
Body
Type - The font used
mainly in the whole document.
BOMB
- When the computer will freeze not allowing the user to input or get
input out, Usually fixed by hitting CTRL + ALT + DEL.
Bookmarks
- Usually used with the Internet allows the user to keep a mark on a page
allowing the user if clicked on the link to go back to the page without
having to do any typing.
Boot-
Meaning to start the computer up causing it to load the operating system
to get you into Windows / DOS / Unix / etc.
Bootable
Disk - Disk that
contains special files so that if the disk is in the drive it will boot
you up to a dos prompt so in case anything goes wrong you can fix the
problem or if you have a game that needs special files you can boot with
the disk allowing it to load what ever is needed saving memory example
of a boot disk.
Bootleg
- Illegal reproduced copy of a piece of software.
Brightness
- Display control on the monitor allows you to make the monitor brighter
or darker usually represented by a sun.
Broadcast
- Transmit information to one then one person at a time (SPAM).
Browse
- To look through data quickly by scrolling through it (were Browser
comes from.)
Browser
- Program that allows you to view the Internet.
Brush
- Basic tool used in creating images with a drawing program.
Bubble
Jet Printer - Cannons
name for his inkjet printer.
Bubble Memory - Type of non-volatile
memory composed with a thin layer of material that can be easily
magnetized in only one direction. When a magnetic field is applied to a
circular area of this substance that is not magnetized in the same
direction, the area is reduced to a smaller circle, or bubble. During the
first stages while bubble memory was released it was widely believed that
it would become one of the leading memory technologies, but these
promises have not been fulfilled. Other non-volatile memory types, such
as EEPROM is faster and less
expensive
